Zheng Qinwen shares photos with new coach for technical adjustments; foreign media says she's targeting French Open, with Sunshine Double results key to partnership.

On March 2nd Beijing time, Chinese top player Zheng Qinwen updated her Instagram story, sharing her training routine in Palm Springs, California, with the caption "Tomorrow is another day" and a "hard work" emoji. It is reported that Zheng has been in the United States for several days, undergoing multiple high-intensity training sessions, and is about to restart her 2026 season at the WTA 1000 Indian Wells tournament.

The Indian Wells tournament is not only Zheng Qinwen's season restart but also her official debut with her new coach, 61-year-old Spanish veteran Jordi Arrese. Arrese is a notable figure; he is not only the former Spanish Davis Cup captain but also the mentor who guided Zheng's previous coach, Pere Riba. Observers have joked that Zheng has switched from "master" to "grandmaster."

From the training videos and on-site photos currently circulating, Arrese's technical modifications for Zheng Qinwen have quietly begun. Reportedly, the training focus is primarily on clay court play: including adding more topspin and sidespin to her serve, refining her signature sliding movement technique, increasing the proportion of defensive backhand slices, and making slight adjustments to her forehand backswing.

Foreign media widely believe that although the Sunshine Double consists of hard court events, the technical groundwork Arrese is laying for Zheng Qinwen is clearly aimed at the French Open at the end of May.

Due to an elbow injury, Zheng Qinwen missed the Australian Open Grand Slam at the start of the year, and her world ranking has dropped from a peak of No. 4 to her current No. 24. In the earlier Middle Eastern season, she returned to competition and won a match in Doha, but her overall form is still being sought. Zheng candidly admitted in a pre-tournament interview: "Recent developments haven't been to my liking; I'm working hard to find my rhythm again."

Arriving at Indian Wells, Zheng Qinwen has a decent past record here—she reached the quarterfinals last year. However, her path this year may not be easy. Due to her ranking drop, she no longer enjoys the first-round bye given to seeded players and could face top seeds early on.

Foreign media have paid close attention to Zheng Qinwen and Arrese's new partnership. Analysis points out that while their ultimate goal is the French Open, the upcoming "Sunshine Double" (Indian Wells + Miami) will be crucial in determining whether they can continue together into the clay court season.

If they can quickly develop chemistry and achieve good results at these two major hard court tournaments, it would undoubtedly inject strong confidence into the upcoming clay court preparations. However, if their performance at the Sunshine Double is poor, it's possible Zheng Qinwen might consider another coaching change.

Furthermore, the UK's Daily Mail reported that Zheng Qinwen's team is still actively contacting other well-known tennis coaches. Although the specific list hasn't been revealed, speculation includes names like Naomi Osaka's current coach Victorrovsky, tennis legend Andre Agassi, British star Andy Murray, and Serena Williams' former coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

After Zheng Qinwen posted her story, domestic fans expressed their support on social media. Although in a previous poll, over 60% of netizens expressed concern about Zheng's prospects at this tournament, optimism is returning as her training condition is revealed.

Netizen "SS Su Da Green" said: "Changing coaches is like changing a weapon; Zheng Qinwen's North American trip is worth looking forward to!" Another netizen said: "Give her some time; she can definitely do it." Fans also left encouraging comments under her IG post: "Go Wenwen, a new day, a new start, just play healthy!"

As the Indian Wells main draw is about to begin, whether this "big-hearted" girl from Hubei can stage a comeback under her new coach's guidance will be one of the most watched focal points in tennis this March. As she herself said, "Tomorrow is another day." The 2026 season for Zheng Qinwen might truly begin from this desert oasis in California.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Lu Xiaotian)
