Decisive Set Comeback Victory! China's Fourth Challenge Final Ends in Championship, Marking a New Career Breakthrough

As widely recognized, in competitions below the Masters category, tennis players need to achieve five straight wins to become the champion. Chinese seasoned player Li Zhe advanced to the Challenger final twice, yet was defeated on both occasions, settling for second place; the young post-05 talent Zhou Yi entered three Challenger finals, each time ending in loss; while Hong Kong, China athlete Huang Zelin competed in five Challenger finals but never succeeded in winning a single match.

However, perseverance always pays off. Last week, a tennis player achieved a new career breakthrough in a Challenger final. So, who is this player, and what breakthrough did he accomplish? Let this article take you through the details today.

This player is Italian talent China. In September 2024, he claimed his first Futures title. That November, China won two consecutive matches at the ATP CH75 Matsuyama Challenger, reaching his first Challenger quarterfinal and attracting considerable attention from fans.

In mid-March 2025, fresh from winning his second Futures championship, China received a wildcard and defeated Australian player M Dellavedova in the first round of the ATP CH50 Hersonissos Challenger, securing his first main-draw Challenger victory of the 2025 season. In the second round, he delivered a bagel to upset his opponent, advancing to his second Challenger quarterfinal.

In the quarterfinals, China swept past Turkish player Kirkin in straight sets to reach his first Challenger semifinal. In the semifinal, facing the tournament’s second seed, Russian player Karatsev—a former Grand Slam semifinalist—China performed exceptionally, conceding only six games. Although he made it to the final, he was swept by Bulgarian player Kirkin and missed the title. Nevertheless, China became the first post-07 player to reach a Challenger final. That same month, he also earned his first career tour-level win at the Miami Masters.

In late May, after suffering three consecutive losses, China entered the ATP CH50 Tbilisi Challenger as the eighth seed. He marched through the draw, defeating Russian player P Bar Biryukov, Moldovan player I Snitari, third-seeded Ivorian player E Coulibaly, and British player Broome, ending his losing streak and reaching his second Challenger final. Unfortunately, in the final, he lost to the fourth seed, Georgian player Purtseladze, and finished as runner-up.

In late October, amid another losing streak, China competed as the sixth seed at the ATP CH50 Hamburg Challenger. He battled through a tough three-set match against Slovak qualifier M Karol in the first round, finally halting his slide. Perhaps gaining confidence from that win, China then strung together three consecutive victories, advancing to his third Challenger final. However, in the final, he was defeated by German player Engel, a contemporary, narrowly missing the championship.

Last week, at the ATP CH75 Pune Challenger, China breezed past Japanese qualifier Takuya Kumasaka in the first round. In the second round, he served a breadstick to comfortably defeat Japanese player Yuta Shimizu. He then went on to beat British player Gray and Croatian player Aidukovic, securing his fourth career Challenger final.

In his first Challenger final, China faced British player Gill. He took the first set 6-3, but Gill fought back to claim the second set 7-5, forcing a decider. In the final set, Gill even held match points. At that critical moment, China mounted a comeback, saving five match points to level the score, then pushed the set to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, he proved more clutch and clinched the victory.

After four finals, the championship finally arrived. With this title, China not only lifted his first Challenger trophy but also broke into the top 200 for the first time, rising to a career-high world No. 183. Persistence has its reward. The young post-07 talent has a promising future ahead. That’s today’s tennis story—more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Yixin Jushi)
