The New York Yankees dominated the Minnesota Twins 17-5 in today's spring training game. Their 201-cm rookie outfielder, Spencer Jones, launched his third home run of the spring! This home run crashed straight into the center field backdrop. Jones has homered in back-to-back games, and all three of his hits in preseason action have been home runs.
Jones was the starting center fielder batting sixth in this game. In the top of the first inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, he drew a walk, helping the Yankees push across their second run. The Yankees batted around in the first inning, capitalizing on four walks, two hits, and a throwing error by the Twins catcher to score five runs in the frame.
In the top of the second inning, the Yankees hit two home runs, extending their lead to 8-1. Jones grounded out in this half-inning. The Yankees were retired in order in both the third and fourth innings. In the top of the fifth, with no outs and a runner on first, Jones came to bat. A wild pitch by the Twins pitcher advanced the runner into scoring position. After a full count, Jones swung at an inside curveball and launched a two-run homer, which traveled 427 feet. The Yankees sent nine batters to the plate again this inning, collecting four hits including two two-run homers, stretching the lead to 14-1.
Jones was substituted in the top of the sixth inning. In this game, he reached base in both of his plate appearances, driving in three runs. So far in four preseason games, he has failed to get a hit in only one contest. All three of his hits have been home runs, giving him a spring training batting average of .375 and five RBIs.
