The World Baseball Classic is about to commence, with Chinese Taipei set to play against Japan on March 6, which will also be Japan’s first game in the event. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is anticipated to be the starting pitcher, and Los Angeles Dodgers reporter Angela Wu shared on social media that Yamamoto’s pitch limit for this initial Classic game is roughly 45 to 50 pitches.
Yamamoto is expected to start against Chinese Taipei in the World Baseball Classic opener. On February 22, he made his first appearance in a Major League spring training game, throwing 30 pitches over 1.2 innings against the Los Angeles Angels, striking out three but allowing two runs. He is scheduled to pitch again on February 28 in an away game against the San Francisco Giants, which will be his last start before joining the Japanese national team for training.
Although the Classic already imposes pitch limits on pitchers, Dodgers reporter Angela Wu noted on social media that Yamamoto’s pitch count in the Classic is restricted to about 45 to 50 pitches.
Based on Yamamoto’s pitching performance, he is expected to pitch more than three innings in his opening preliminary game. This limit is stricter than the official Classic first-round maximum of 65 pitches per game, suggesting that Japan might need to use a "two-starting-pitcher" strategy, with a second pitcher taking over after Yamamoto exits.
